Fat Loss

When it comes to body transformation, most people are interested in "losing 10 to 20 lbs and firming up," often thinking they need a lot of cardio, some strength training, and a little dieting. When, in actuality, it’s a little cardio, some strength training and a lot of attention to your diet!

Many people know this, but still struggle with extra body fat. "Eat clean, drink lots of water, more veggies, less processed carbs and sugar, get enough protein, don't eat when stressed". All of this is good advice, but our bellies, hips and thighs are still holding on to excess...hmmm, "stored energy!" That's what fat is, stored energy. Good nutritional tips and any number of training programs, will never deliver the results we are looking for, unless we address the first rule of fat loss, which is "Calories In vs Calories Out" (the amount of energy we take in vs the amount of energy we expend).

To transform into your healthiest, strongest and best looking self, do what the most successful trainers and their clients do. Know how much food (calories) your body needs and is actually taking in and track your progress.

How many calories you need per day is not that hard to figure out. We have tools that can estimate your energy needs based on your height, weight, gender, age, activity level and fat loss (or muscle gain) goals. Since these tools give estimated calorie needs, it’s equally important to track how you’re doing. If your losing weight too fast, that can be unhealthy and unsustainable. If you’re not losing at all, something needs to be adjusted. Maybe you are taking in more or burning less than you think! Weekly tracking allows us to make regular course corrections as needed, keeping you moving forward. Tracking also helps with motivation. We suggest Body Fat Testing, circumference measurements, photos or the fit of your clothes... the scale is the least useful tool. Body weight can fluctuate a great deal from day to day and a person could lose weight and be fatter or less healthy. This happens with quick weight loss, which is mostly water and muscle.

Here is what you need to do: ask one of our trainers or myself to measure your body fat percentage and body metrics. Let us calculate your energy and calorie needs. We can train you and set up weekly monitoring of your progress. If you need help with prepping meals that give you the right amount of calories with the right mix of proteins, fats, and carbs, we have a wonderful meal prep service. The food is delicious, fresh, and offered at an affordable cost. Lindsey Taylor, our Union Cafe Chef can make you a variety of meals that fit your tastes and your caloric needs. Even if you like to cook, the convenience of this service is worth a try.

So, if you are serious about your health and fitness, (especially if you need to drop extra pounds), call me today!

Pool Safety

imgThe sun is out and our pools are getting busier. We feel it is time to remind all of our amazing members the pool policies that help keep all of our members (especially our smallest members) safe!

POOL RULES AND POLICIES:

1. Parents: Please watch your children. There is absolutely no substitute for your close, vigilant supervision.
2. Rules and requests made by lifeguards and staff must be complied with at all times.
3. There is no lifeguard on duty! Use pool at your own risk.
4. Please keep all gates closed that surround the pool. They are safety barriers to keep our children safe.
5. Children under age 14 must be directly supervised by an adult, even when a lifeguard is on duty.
6. Only proper fitting U.S. Coast Guard approved personal floatation devices, noodles, and kickboards may be used. No floaties, water wings, mattresses, boogie boards, or inflatable toys. The shadows cast by mattresses and rings children sit in make it hard to see someone under the water.
7. All children who wear diapers must wear swim diapers.
8. No jets should be on in the hot tub if there is a child present under the age of 7 years.
9. Appropriate swimwear must be worn while using the pools, wading pools, and spa.
10. The last two lap-lanes are reserved for lap swimming only.
11. For safety, the following are prohibited:
· Horseplay, running, splashing, shoving, dunking, or hitting.
· Smoking and chewing gum
· Glass containers
· Diving
· Flips or spinning entries from the side of the pool
· Throwing balls (except sponge balls) in the pool or on the deck.
· Cell phone use while supervising children. For safety reasons, do not use cell phones while supervising children in the pool.
· Climbing on rocks
· Running and jumping on ramp into large pool

Thank you for helping us have the safest summer yet!

Winning Isn’t Always Defined by the Score

img

As summer approaches and we are gonna’ spend more time on the courts, I thought I’d visit some ideas that aren’t related to technique or strategies or footwork that might be worth mentioning. So this month’s article is about how we approach our mindset about playing. Whether it’s new tournaments, leagues, team play or just hitting with our friends, fact is, like it or not, you’re not going to play tennis well or the way you’d like to, every time you step out to compete. In fact, sometimes you won’t even win playing your best either.

Here's the reality: You will have more days that you ARE NOT going to be playing how you’d like to. Part of the reason why players get down on themselves is due to their expectations and the fact that they want to play ‘their way’ every time they step out to compete. The truth is – it’s impossible.

That might sound a little negative, but it’s the reality. You have always got to expect the best from yourself and give your very best, but be prepared and ready to handle the way you are going to think when you aren’t playing how you’d like to. It’s not all going to go the way you plan it, but you can control how you are going to react to it. Great tennis players are great, not only because they may be brilliant shot makers, but partially because they are more self- accepting of their mistakes. They just know how to deal with it better. They are consistent in their habits and routines too. That’s the reason they’ve won some of their biggest matches or tournaments playing far less from their best. Take a look at these quotes from some of the best tennis players in the world and see how they might apply to you.

"In the heat of battle, you don’t rise to your level, you sink to the habits you have created in your practices”. Great quote - You become your habits under pressure.

"Most of the time you don’t play the way you want, things don’t go the way that you would like to, so you have to manage that”.

“I know I’m not going to play the way I want to every time, but I can control how I’m going to think about it. What matters is that I’m trying my hardest every game, putting in the work”.

So, give a little time to these thoughts and see how they might help you achieve your personal goals on the court:

A successful tennis player accepts that they aren't going to play their best every time they step out on the court to compete.

They understand that success lies in the consistent control of their habits, emotions and mindset.

A successful tennis player understands that in order to win on their 'bad' days, they need to continually give their best effort and believe they can actually win. They don't let a negative or bad attitude get in the way.

You are not defined by what you do or by your results on the scoreboard, rather, you are defined by WHO you become and how you handled the journey.
See Ya’ on the Courts, Gary
