Introducing Devin Barber, Director of Tennis for Paso Robles Sports Club
The Paso Robles Sports Club is pleased to announce the hiring of our new Director of Tennis, Devin Barber. Devin’s name may sound familiar to you but his resume may be quite a surprise.
Devin grew up in Atascadero playing on every public court available before any tennis clubs existed. Due to his hard work he reached his dream of playing D-1 tennis for Cal Poly SLO (the only college he ever wanted to attend). While being honored to captain the team his senior year, he realized he loved the coaching and mentoring aspect even more than playing.
Upon graduating with a degree in Sports Management, he moved directly into working with former World #1, Victoria Azarenka. At the time she had assembled the top coaching team in the world. It was there as a hitting partner, and video analysis coordinator that Devin soaked up every single thing he could traveling the world with the most distinguished coaches and staff. Upon Azarenka’s pregnancy, he began working at an Elite Academy with the top juniors in the nation. There he learned what committed “academy life” looked like as he traveled the US as a coach with groups of highly ranked juniors. This caught the eye of the coach to Bethany Mattek- Sands, and he was brought on to work in their academy in Arizona as well as serve as hitting partner, video analysis coordinator and team member. Traveling to all Grand Slams with two different Grand Slam Champions, as well as Fanny Stollar, was the experience of a lifetime.
The culmination of his experiences at clubs all around the world left him wanting to bring excellence in tennis back to the Central Coast and more specifically the North County. “I believe the Central Coast is the most ideal place to live in all the world, and I would love to see high level juniors being developed in the place I love most. It is here I fell in love with tennis, and I believe kids here should have that same opportunity. Junior tennis just seems to have gotten lost up here in the last decade, and my dream is to bring it back”, said Barber.
Devin is certified as a Tennis Professional by the United States Professional Tennis Association. To schedule a lesson with Devin, please contact him via email at [email protected].

Obey The Doubles Laws!
As
our courts are always filling up with a lot of member and league
doubles play, I thought it might be helpful to review some of the laws
we should abide by for the game most of us play.
1.) “Close to Close/Deep to Deep” Law
When
your formation is one up, one back; the basic strategy is to hit the
ball to the opponent who mirrors your position on the court. If you’re
up at the net – hit it to the net person to rob them of time to react;
if you’re in the backcourt – hit it to your counterpart on the opposing
baseline, wide enough not allowing the net person to cross and poach a
winning volley. The exception – if you’re at net and have to volley/hit
up from below the top of the net, hit it to the deep opponent. Hitting a
low volley; high, to your opposing net person will most likely reward
you with a shot hit right back to you for a “fuzz sandwich”.
2.) Don’t play “Heart Attack Doubles” Law
The
net person on the team is constantly watching the ball travel back and
forth past them to their baseline partner; effectively getting a nice
sun tan while your partner has a “heart attack” running every shot down.
The net person should get up to the “launching position” – meaning -
whenever the ball passes your opposite net person and you know they
can’t hurt you with a quick poach volley; from your “normal” net
position, close to within 6-8 feet of the net, taking a step or two
towards the center strap, getting ready for you to poach on a soft or
slightly high return. Be active, get involved, get into the other team’s
head and disrupt their shots. It’s much more fun to hit the ball than
to watch it sail past you constantly and your odds of winning the point
go up dramatically with whoever strikes the first volley.
3.) “Serve Smarter, Not Harder” Law
Understand
your opponent’s weaker side for returns and direct most of your serves
there. Having your opponents return serve from their weaker side with
your partner stationed right at the net can be very intimidating. When
serving to the deuce court, perhaps hit most of your serves down the
“T”, making your opponents attempt perhaps the hardest shot in doubles
tennis - the inside-out backhand return. Take a little speed off your
first serve if necessary and try to maintain a first serve percentage of
at least 60-65%.
4.) “Three Laws of Poaching”
Always poach
when - 1) When your opponent’s shot is returned from behind the baseline
– this allows you plenty of time to cover the ball that’s hit
cross-court. 2) When the ball is hit low to your opponent’s feet – they
will have to hit up and allow you an opportunity take the higher, weaker
return and nail it for a winner. 3) When your opponent’s are constantly
beating your partner in baseline rallies, you have to mix it up and
throw off their steadiness. Remember - you don’t have to hit crushing,
the crowd gets on their feet, winning volleys every time. Just showing
your opponents you’re active at the net will disrupt their play and
typically sway the action in your favor.
Obey these few doubles laws and watch your winning percentage in doubles skyrocket!
