Lara Wilson, USA Weightlifting ranked #1 in the nation

Lara and her daughter, Amanda, have fun training together.

Lara, a teacher at Templeton High School, was a runner forever; half marathons and marathons, you name it, she ran it. She never felt “fit” though… What was missing?

She tried Andre Acebo’s MaxFit class, she says, “which confirmed my lack of fitness!” She wanted to try competing in the CrossFit Open Series that happen once a year BUT she needed to learn the Olympic Weightlifting lifts. Andre, a USA Weightlifting coach, invited her to work out with the team to become more familiar with the Olympic lifts. Lara went to train and fell in love with the sport! She was hooked! In four years she has competed all over the U.S. and is currently ranked #1 in the 75kg 50-54 year old class. Lara has two children and lives in Paso Robles.

Private Pilates Sessions with Jennifer “JJ” Johnson

imgHi, I'm JJ. I have been a NSCA Certified Personal Trainer since 2007. In 2008, I began my Pilates journey through STOTT Pilates on the reformer. I fell in love with the way I could empower others to take charge of their health and fitness by learning to move from the inside out.

Having children gave me an even greater understanding of what the body can go through and still come back! My favorite part of teaching pilates is when muscles begin to find balance and a person is free from the pain that poor posture/body mechanics can cause. It's incredible to see how pilates can improve all aspects of fitness at every level! Whether you are a new mom, recovering from injury, or an elite athlete; Pilates is for you! When you have a strong core and a solid mind-body connection you can achieve anything you set your mind to!

Chiropractor and Strength Coach
PRSC Fitness Director

This month I am happy to introduce the newest member of our personal training team, Tina Mace. Tina comes to us with loads of experience, a high level of education, knowledge, and a strong track record of success with a variety of clients. Here's a couple of awesome photos and a few words from Tina herself...

Fitness is truly my passion. I first stepped foot in the gym when I was 16 years old and I was instantly drawn to the weight machines. The power and strength I felt while lifting was exhilarating. I continued to develop my physical skill sets while working for the US Military and shifted my focus over the years to one of total wellness. Nutrition and its effect on performance has always intrigued me and its correlation to bodybuilding took me down the path of competitive fitness and coaching. I am blessed to have so many fantastic clients and friends who drive my passion everyday.

I am originally from California and relocated to the central coast 7 years ago. I am certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Certified Personal Trainer, Corrective Exercise Specialist, Fitness Nutritionist, and Weight Loss Specialist. I have over 25 years of experience as a Lifestyle Coach, and hold a Master of Science in Holistic Health and Nutrition Education. I was very fortunate to attend the Cooper Institute for Aerobic Research under the direction of Dr Kenneth Cooper (private physician to former president George W Bush), and hold a Purple Belt in Kenpo Karate and Muay Thai Kickboxing. I am a Nationally Ranked Figure and Physique athlete and Coach for NPC Bodybuilding, Physique, Figure, & Bikini Athletes. I would say that my training philosophy is to help each individual fuel their own success in all facets of health and wellness through holistic means.

This is what one of her many clients has to say about her...
"Ever meet someone who has an undeniable instinct to see the best in everyone? If you said no, you haven’t met Tina Mace. My transformation with Tina started 8 months ago. I was ready to make my dream of becoming a figure athlete a reality. We strategized, evaluated and set achievable milestones to keep motivation at its peak. Her passion for high octane performance and expertise in body mechanics allows Tina to train to the max while mitigating the risk of injury. Her love and compassion for all her clients extends far beyond the gym. Her soulful passion surrounds mind and body fitness. Through loving accountability and always asking for that “extra rep” she leads people on their journey to their highest and best self!"

Although Tina has unique skills and the experience to help her clients achieve a "stage ready" appearance, a great many of her clients are not interested in the sport bodybuilding or figure competition. Rather, they want to move better, feel better, be stronger and lose unwanted body fat. Incorporating corrective exercise and a holistic health approach, Tina can help any of our members achieve their fitness and wellness goals. Give her a call today at (805) 835-2601.

As always you can call or text me with any of your chiropractic, fitness or sports club questions.

Swimming is one of the world’s most popular activities, and encompasses a wide variety of skills from a refreshing dip in the lake on a hot summer day to endurance and speed competitions. However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 14 percent of adults do not know how to swim and, on average, 10 people die from drowning every day in the United States. Because swimming safety is of the utmost importance, swimming is learned primarily as a life skill and secondarily for sport. We want to be a part of lowering this percentage of drownings each year.

Poaching Rules to Start the New Year

Few things feel better on the doubles court than anticipating an opponent’s return, moving across the net, and drilling a volley right between the legs of a helpless partner. Poaching is the slam dunk strategy of doubles and when you incorporate it into your game, your team immediately becomes stronger in two ways. First, you gain the ability to end points in a quick and intimidating manner. Second, when you’re active at the net, you’ll forever keep your opponents guessing about your court positioning, which keeps them off balance and insecure about the direction of their shots, causing excessive unforced errors.

Think about these rules of poaching and how you can apply to them to intimidate and obliterate your opponents.

Rule # 1 - Develop Fast Feet
Poaching requires energy and fast feet. Take a look at the Bryan brothers when they play each point, just as their opponents are about to strike the ball, they look as if they’re about to jump out of their shoes. Here’s that split step again! Keep your feet active and your hands and racquet up. This will send an intimidating energy toward your opponents and get them thinking more about you than the shots they’re about to hit.

Rule # 2 - Attack at an angle
So now, you’ve identified the situation and committed to poaching. Timing is now crucial because if you make your move too soon, your opponent will have time to adapt. If you move too late, you won’t be able to catch up to the ball. As your opponent moves toward the ball, begin closing in on the net. Keep your eyes glued to his or her racquet head. When the forward swing begins, you know your opponent has committed to the shot. This is the time to make your move. Push off your outside leg and explode diagonally toward the net. By moving at a forward angle, you’ll get closer to the net and cut off your opponent’s shot more quickly.

Rule # 3 - Finish a high ball with a low volley... If your opponent return is a high “sitter” and you’re moving across the net and have an opportunity, drill it down at the feet of the opposing net player for a winner…
And a low ball with an angle volley... If you’re faced with a low shot, you’ll have to hit “up” on your volley, so you want to be sure to keep it away from the net player. Volley the ball crosscourt, back to the player at the baseline giving you time to “start the point over” and work your team back into the point.

Rule # 4 - Perfect the fake
The fake poach is a great move. It keeps your opponents guessing and helps you disguise your real poaches. The key to a good fake is to sell your first step. Take an early, strong step toward the center and, when you land, immediately push back toward the direction you came from. In this sequence, the fake is to the center and results in an easy volley when the opponent hits the ball down the line to what looked like a clear opening.

Rule # 5 - When disaster strikes
You’ve read the situation, timed the poach perfectly, and your opponent promptly drives the ball behind you for a winner. You’re embarrassed, you apologize to your partner, and vow to never poach again, right? Wrong! To be a force at the net, you must have thick skin. Many players gauge their poaching success by the number of times they actually end the point. This is only a small part of the benefit of poaching. Your overall goal is to create an atmosphere of uncertainty among your opponents.

So…next time you take the court, commit to being active. Every time the ball crosses the net be up on your toes, moving, faking and poaching. By planting the seed that you might poach, you’ll disrupt the other team’s focus and force weak shots and errors. Don’t let your inexperience at this skill prevent from attempting this extremely beneficial part of doubles strategy. You may never know how good you may be at it if you never try!

Copy and paste the link below to take a look at a short video on You Tube about that all-important split step I’m always talking about and referred to again this month as one of the keys to the Bryan Brothers double success.
