The New Year is upon us! I Hope you had a joyful time with your friends and family. Unfortunately, many of us also experience the stress of the holidays. So, I want to start off this year, discussing stress, its various forms, consequences and strategies to manage its effect in our lives. For a deeper understanding of acute vs chronic stress, and the health risks that chronic stress imposes, read "Five Things You Must Know About Stress" by the Poliquin Group. Here's the link, https://shar.es/1Dc8TP.
Here are some strategies to deal with stress, and still thrive!
Relax your Body: Get Good Sleep, Massage, Rigorous & Regular Exercise
Refresh your Mind: Take long walks. Go outside. Listen to Music and Sing. Be fully present.
Rejuvenate your Soul: Forgive others and yourself. Be thankful. Do not gossip. Focus on things you can change; don't worry about the rest. Slow down. Turn off the T.V. Hug at least 5 people a day. Laugh more, complain less.
These are just a few ways to start the New Year right. Have your membership, our trainers, and the friends you make here at the club help you. Have a cup of coffee & sit awhile. Ask for help from our team of fitness pros. Make 2017 the year you change your health and fitness habits.
Look for our Weight Loss Challenge this month!

Happy New Year to All!!
As we all make our New Year resolutions to ourselves and our families, I thought it might be fun to give ourselves some Top Tennis Resolutions for 2017 to enjoy our game more.
I resolve to spend more time on practicing my serve and especially my return of serve. ‘Cause I know those are the two most important shots in tennis and if I don’t get my serve in (and well placed) and my return back consistently (and well placed) to put pressure on my opponents right away, tennis matches become infinitely harder to win.
I know that at the club level good tennis is about minimizing errors, not hitting winners. So I resolve to reduce my errors by making sure I clear the net by a good margin, that I hit the ball close to, but not at, the lines, and whenever possible I’m going to hit the ball x-court over a lower net and a longer court ‘cause I know those are the strategies to place a lot of pressure on my opponents and help me win points (and matches) more consistently.
I resolve to work harder on my footwork. I know it isn’t the coolest way to work on my game, ‘cause what I really want to be able to hit is John Isner’s serve and Jack Sock’s forehand or Serena's serve AND forehand. Now those shots are cool, but I truly know that the easiest and the fastest way to get better at this game without making a lot of technical improvement to my strokes, is to have better footwork.
I know I’ve been trying to groove my baseline ground strokes for months, years (decades?), but I will resolve to work on my transition game and get to the net more. I know that's where I can put more pressure on my opponents, that it can be more fun up there, and that’s where points can be won more easily.
I know it’s easier to win by making my opponents lower their level of play than me trying to raise my level of play instantly on match day, so I resolve to think more out on the court. I'm resolved to develop usable strategies against my opponents and take them out of their game, allowing me to control the match more easily and raise my winning percentage against them.
I resolve to take myself out of my “comfort zone” level of tennis and into the “learning zone” level. I resolve to attend more clinics and tennis functions this year at the club and take some lessons from Mariano and Amy so I can learn new skills, new shots and new strategies to help me enjoy (and win at) this great game even more.
I know I get a lot of my enjoyment from tennis and I love the challenges it presents. But it can be frustrating too, so this year I resolve to have a better time out there. I'll enjoy the competition more, laugh a lot more, have more fun with my tennis partners and don't take either my wins or my losses too seriously.
I wish all of you and your families a great 2017!
See Ya’ on the Courts. Gary
